Here were are in Chichen Itza, A Mayan city in the Yucatan peninsula. It’s only a couple hour bus trip from the beautiful beaches of Cancun, Mexico. It’s still relative safe despite the drug wars currently going on. We went during the off season in June. Yes it was extremely hot but the pools were awesome! The crowds were small and the prices were also small. Try www.cheapcaribbean.com for the best rates. We booked our side trips through our hotel which was English speaking and amazingly helpful. We also went to the cultural heritage museum Xcaret Park. Although kind of Disney-fied it is one place not to miss. We got an amazing amount of Mexican culture in a short amount of time from the Mayans up to today. It’s also a nature preserve where you can get up close to sea turtles, snorkel in caves and swim with tropical fish. Watch Mayan football in traditional costumes and in the evening see dances from all over Mexico. We enjoyed seeing the pride that the Mexican people had in their individual regional dances.
